Anyone who tells you one foam is simply "better" is selling you the foam they stock. The truth: open-cell and closed-cell are different tools. Open-cell is soft, light, and absorbs sound — the cost-effective choice for interior walls and most attic roof decks. Closed-cell is dense, rigid, and waterproof — the armor you want on exterior walls, metal buildings, and anywhere storm strength matters.

The real question isn't "which foam?" — it's "which foam where?" Many RGV homes get both: closed-cell facing the weather, open-cell facing the family.

South Texas tips the scales in specific ways. The humidity argues for closed-cell anywhere foam touches the outside world — it can't absorb water, so the R-value you buy is the R-value you keep. Hurricane season adds a second vote: closed-cell's rigidity strengthens walls and roof decks against wind.

But the RGV also argues for open-cell indoors: our long cooling season rewards getting the most total R-value per dollar into the attic, and open-cell delivers exactly that at typical roof-deck depths.     We mask, contain, and protect non-spray surfaces. The work area is sealed off and ventilated per OSHA standards before a drop of foam is sprayed.

    Same-Crew Spray Application

    PPE-equipped crew sprays in 1–3 inch passes, building up to your target thickness. Most full-home installs are completed in 1–2 days. Larger commercial jobs run 3–5 days.

    Cure, Trim, and Walkthrough

    24-hour cure. We trim any excess foam, clean the work area, and walk through the finished install with you before signing off. Warranty paperwork on the same day.

What is the main difference between open-cell and closed-cell spray foam?
Cell structure. Open-cell foam's cells are partially open, making it soft, light (0.5 lb/ft³), and great at absorbing sound, at roughly R-3.7 per inch. Closed-cell foam's cells are fully sealed, making it rigid, dense (2 lb/ft³), moisture-resistant, and stronger, at roughly R-7 per inch.
Which is better for an attic in the Rio Grande Valley?
For most RGV attic roof decks, open-cell is the workhorse — it's cost-effective at the depths needed and handles the job well. Closed-cell wins when you want maximum R-value in limited depth, added structural strength for storm season, or you're sealing a metal roof.
How much more does closed-cell cost than open-cell?

Does open-cell foam absorb water?
Open-cell foam can absorb and release moisture — which is why it belongs in interior, conditioned applications. Closed-cell is hydrophobic and doubles as a moisture barrier, which is why we specify it for exterior walls, metal buildings, and flood-prone areas.
Which foam is better for soundproofing?
Open-cell, clearly. Its softer structure absorbs sound waves — it's the right choice for interior walls, media rooms, and second-story floors. Closed-cell is too rigid to dampen sound as effectively.
Can you combine both foams in one house?
Yes — and we often do. A common RGV combination: closed-cell on the roof deck and exterior-facing walls for moisture and strength, open-cell on interior walls for sound. The free assessment tells us what your home actually needs.
Which adds structural strength in a hurricane?
Closed-cell. It bonds to studs and sheathing and adds measurable racking strength — documented to help structures resist hurricane-force winds. Open-cell adds minimal structural value.
